The 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen delivered a week of tension, breakthrough moments, and national pride. Played indoors on hard courts from 16–21 September, the knockout event brought together eight of the strongest nations in women’s tennis.
Italy, the defending champions, began their campaign with a solid win over hosts China. From there, the path grew tougher. In the semi-finals against Ukraine, Marta Kostyuk edged Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to give Ukraine an early lead. Jasmine Paolini then produced a gutsy comeback, defeating Elina Svitolina 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to level the tie. Paolini and Sara Errani sealed the victory in the deciding doubles, beating Kostyuk and Lyudmyla Kichenok 6-4, 6-2.
The United States earned their place in the final by overcoming Great Britain 2-0. Emma Navarro opened with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Harriet Dart, followed by Jessica Pegula’s 6-2, 6-4 victory over Katie Boulter. The straight-sets sweep showed American depth, though Britain’s run to the semi-finals was still a significant achievement.
The final belonged firmly to Italy. Cocciaretto set the tone with a composed 6-4, 6-4 win against Navarro, striking cleanly under pressure. Paolini then played some of her best tennis of the season, defeating Pegula 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the title before a doubles rubber was needed. The victory made Italy the first team since the Czech Republic in 2016 to defend the Billie Jean King Cup.
Beyond the champions, Ukraine’s first-ever semi-final run stood out, particularly their opening-round upset of Spain. Great Britain also took positives from their spirited campaign, showing they can compete with the world’s elite.
What shone through most was the team format itself. Familiar tour rivals became teammates, national jerseys replaced sponsors’ kits, and players responded with performances that were fuelled by more than ranking points. Italy’s triumph was historic, but every team left Shenzhen having made some positive steps forward.
